FLAVNT Friday: Best of Austin 2018
As some of you know, FLAVNT is based in Austin, TX -- a queer little oasis in the heart of the South. We love it here besides the things you'd expect an LGBTQ clothing line to dislike about the Conservative Lone Star State. For example, it's Summer 9 months of the year, the beers are cheap, we have access to tons of Mexican food, our San Antonio Spurs are close by, and most of the people are friendly. Another thing we love about Austin is the love for small business in the community down here, mom and pop shops are praised, brands with a cause are sought after, and there's always a queer party or two going on that hits our demographic.
All of this lead up is to talk about the Austin Chronicle's Annual "Best Of Austin" list. Locals get to nominate businesses, establishments, brands, individuals, public figures, etc. for different awards and then you get to brag about being crowned the Best at whatever you do for the rest of the year!
FLAVNT wasn't up for any awards, we didn't particularly fit any of the categories for which to be nominated, but we did get some individual nominations (Chris was up for best local YouTuber and our brunch page @abrunchofqueers on IG was up for Best Local Instagram). So you'd imagine we were a little surprised when we were scrolling through the winners, congratulating our friends on the wins they got, scribbling down names of restaurants we are now dying to try, when we got to the Critic's Choice portion of the awards and saw our name!!
We ended up being named Austin's "Best Way to Flavnt Your Pride", which means that someone on the Chronicle or one of their contributors found us and thought what we were doing or our designs (or both) were cool enough to make up our very own category. We are so proud, humbled, and happy to be Austin's local fave queer brand.
Check out the link below to see our little write-up as well as the other winners!

We Asked 10 Wine Pros: What Wine(s) Should Every Good Restaurant Pour by the Glass?
For those who like to try different wines, a restaurant’s wine list is only as good as its by-the-glass menu. Curating a by-the-glass list can be tricky; selections must complement a medley of dishes, while also balancing traditional tastes and more esoteric experiences. On top of that, there should be options for every budget, so guests can try multiple wines, or order something really special without having to commit to a bottle.
Ordering wine by the glass is all about being comfortable, having fun, and learning — and yes, professionals order wine by the glass, too. To find out which wines are the best finds, VinePair reached out to 10 wine pros across the country to share their tips. Here’s what to look for on by-the-glass wine lists.
“BTG programs are so often overlooked, even by restaurants that have an otherwise great program. Two varietals I always try to have by the glass are Gruner Veltliner and Nebbiolo. Gruner is an easy transition for people wanting a Sauvignon Blanc and likewise Nebbiolo for people wanting Pinot Noir. They are both food-friendly varietals that can get people out of their box.” — Matthew Pridgen, Wine Director, Underbelly Hospitality, Houston, TX
“I think Grenache is an all too forgotten wine that is perfect for most BTG programs. It’s a little sturdier than Pinot Noir but still incredibly versatile to pair with so many different ingredients. Depending on the cuisine being served, you can choose Grenache from various parts of the world with different flavor profiles that will fit into just about any menu.” — Tiffany Kuhn, Estate Sommelier, Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery, Healdsburg, CA
“Something red from Sicily, like a Nero d’Avola or Frappato, or a blend of the two. The quality is awesome, and the plain drinkability makes it great for ‘by the glass,’ because the customers can’t help but finish glass after glass.” — Jeremy Allen, Certified Sommelier and General Manager, MiniBar Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA
“Sparkling wine without a doubt! It’s by far the most versatile food wine out there and there are great sparkling wines (and styles) in every price point. While we think of sparkling wine as a ‘special occasion’ wine it goes well with everything from potato chips to lobster. In fact, my favorite Champagne pairing is humble fried chicken with high-end Champagne. My current favorite on our by-the-glass list is a Spanish blanc de blancs from Raventos i Blanc.” — Angela Gargano, Director of Wine & Spirits, Triple Creek Ranch, Darby, MT
“Tempranillo because of its unique bouquet of complexity for a very affordable value. Tempranillo is always a crowd pleaser with versatility that goes great with any dish on the table.” — Brooke Warden, Owner and Certified Sommelier, Pink Cactus, Charleston, SC
“Every good restaurant’s wine list should include a nice bubbles option by the glass. Too often, customers are presented with a budget sparkling wine for a BTG pour. For those wanting to start with something of good quality like a true Champagne, they have to make the choice of getting a full bottle of bubbles or skipping it and getting a bottle of red or white with dinner. Having a nice by-the-glass sparkling option lets them have their glass for a toast, then ease into the dinner wine and gives the best of both worlds.” — Matthew Emborski, Sommelier, Hilton Norfolk The Main, Norfolk, VA
“A brut rosé Champagne, a brut from Anderson Valley, a German Riesling, three big reds, and a Sauternes.” — Mario Ortiz, General Manager, Sommelier, and Wine Director, The Firehouse, Sacramento, CA
“Every good restaurant should have an approachable white Burgundy on their list. I hear so many people say things like ‘I don’t drink Chardonnay,’ or ‘I only drink reds,’ completely ignoring what I think is the best expression of the grape. There are so many beautiful examples for people to fall in love with, any decent restaurant should carry at least one.” — David Gibbs, Co-owner, Sushi Note, Sherman Oaks, CA
“I think this is heavily dependent on your restaurant concept and customer base. I like to offer options in the most popular categories. For example, one oaky buttery Chardonnay, and one that is crisp, bright, and lean. For Cabernet I want to have one that is more classically styled and shows some restraint and one that is big, bold, and in your face. I think you should have wines that pair well with your cuisine and make sense. Italian restaurants should have Chianti. Spanish restaurants should have some Rioja. Seafood-focused restaurants should have Muscadet and bubbles.” — Zackariah Taylor, Wine Director, Gibsons Italia, Chicago, IL
“A nice, affordable French sparkler — so everybody can feel special any day of the week.” — Jan Bugher, Manager/Wine Director, Bluebeard, Indianapolis, IN

Best 12 Restaurants in Austin for Tater Tots
Post from Girl Eats World Leave a comment/read the entire post here
I love tots a tot. In college, I’ve had many meals of just tots and mustard. It’s a mystery to me why I waited this long to go on an Austin tot tour. But I did it. I researched and crowdsourced, and am happy to present to you my list of best 12 restaurants that pay great tribute to the humble potato nugget. There are food trucks, sit-down restaurants, and sports bars in this tot guide. My hope is that there’s a tot out there for everyone!
1. Be More Pacific’s Longanisa Tots
Locations vary, check social media for daily schedule http://www.bemorepacifictruck.com/
The Longanisa (lon-ga-NEE-sa) Tots from Filipino food truck, Be More Pacific was my most unique experience during my tot tour of Austin. Longansia is Filipino pork sausage. According to Be More Pacific’s website, it’s the national sausage of the Philippines. Their Longansia Tots are crispy tater tots topped with melted cheese, crumbled garlicky sweet longanisa pork sausage, and spicy plantain sauce garnished with green onion. The plantain sauce is often called banana sauce. My Filipino bestie has told me about banana sauce but I had yet to experience it until these tots! It tastes like a sweetened ketchup sauce.
Tot Tip
: Experience the rest of their menu! I recommend their pancit if you love noodles!
2. Luke’s Inside Out’s Tater Tot Hash
1109 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704 https://www.lukesinsideout.com/
A long side some of Luke’s Inside Out’s delicious brunch entrées you can get a side of his Tater Tot Hash. I’m so happy his tater tot hash led me to his trailer and brunch offerings! I have my eye on his Szechuan Chicken and Waffles with Brie for my next visit.
Tot Tip
: Tots are only available during brunch and brunch is only on Sundays!
3. Eastside Tavern’s Brisket and Cheddar Tots
1510 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702 http://www.eastsidetavernaustin.com/
I was tipped off about the brisket cheddar tater tots at East Side Tavern and envisioned tots that are topped with cheese and brisket. To my pleasant surprise, these hand formed tots are actually stuffed with cheddar and brisket! Talk about next level tots! They are served with a chipotle aioli.
4. Brass Tap’s Beer Cheese Tots
10910 Domain Dr #120, Austin, TX 78758 https://www.brasstapbeerbar.com/austin
Can you go wrong with a jalapeño beer cheese? I don’t think so. These handmade tots is sprinkled with crispy bacon and then indulgently smothered with jalapeño beer cheese.
5. Juniper’s Elegant Potato Puffs
2400 E Cesar Chavez St #304, Austin, TX 78702 http://juniperaustin.com
I’m so glad Juniper’s brunch menu isn’t readily available as takeout or every Friday and Saturday night, you’d find me on my couch with 3 orders of their Potato Puffs in my lap as I binge something on Netflix (currently Orange is the New Black)! My long love affair with tater tots definitely plays towards my down home and comfortable palate. That said, I can appreciate a sophisticated spin on this classic comfort snack, and these “potato puffs” are an elegant and velvety whipped version of my down-to-earth favorite.
6. Kung Fu Saloon’s Kimchi Tots
Multiple locations http://www.kungfusaloonaustin.com/
We’ve all enjoyed kimchi fries, but have you had kimchi tots? Kung Fu Saloon does brunch now and on their menu is kimchi tots! It was after trying their kimchi tots that I decided to officially embark on a tot tour. Their tot dish has scrambled eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese, Korean ribeye, smoky queso, and kimchi.
7. Austin Taco Project Poutine Tater Tots
500 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78701 https://www.austintacoproject.com/
Austin Taco Project in the Downtown Hilton Hotel has a poutine tot appetizer! It features ribeye cap barbacoa, tater tots, fried cheese curd, poblano gravy, and a sunny side up egg. Now you don’t have to decide between Taco Tuesday and Tater Tot Tuesday. They can peacefully coexist!
Tot Tip
: They open for dinner starting at 4 pm!
8. Velvet Taco’s Tater Tots
11501 Rock Rose Suite 160, Austin, TX 78758 https://velvettaco.com/
Speaking of tacos and tots coexisitng, another happy place for both tots and tacos, is Velvet Taco. A few years ago I was in Dallas for a weekend and standing in line at Velvet Taco. I said something to my friends about wanting to try their tater tots and the man in front of me turns around and his eyes bugged out and insisted that they’re amazing. People who light up over tater tots are basically my kindred spirits. Hat tip to Patrick from Velvet Taco line. Lucky for us in Austin, Velvet Taco opened up recently in the Domain in Austin! Their specialty are fun tacos inspired by cuisines around the world, and their tots are spot on. They’re topped with goat cheese, smoked cheddar-basil crema, bacon crumbles and a fried egg. I mean, come on.
9. Posse East’s Queso Chili Tots
2900 Duval Street, Austin, TX 78705 http://www.posseeast.com/
The Posse East is a divey classic on the Univeristy of Texas campus. There’s something about eating greasy and gooey queso chili tots in a campus dive. Get a pitcher of beer, order a few orders of the queso chilli tots, and enjoy the patio!
Tot Tip
: You can grab jalapeños from their condiment corner.
10. Plucker’s Totchos
Multiple Locations http://www.pluckers.com/
Speaking of campus eats, I hadn’t been to Plucker’s in over ten years when I was a student at UT. In the course of this tot tour, I’ve gone twice in a week and ordered their totchos twice. Chicken, barbecue sauce, cheese, on tots! I’m going to be bold and say it. Totchos are way better than nachos!
Tot Tip
: They have a ridiculous Bloody Mary.
11. PS35’s Pizza Tots
1500 N Interstate Hwy 35, Round Rock, TX 78681 https://www.ps35pizza.com/
Two childhood comforts smashed into one awesome hybrid, the Pizza Tots at newly opened PS35 literally got me to put on clothes. I was at home determined to stay in my pajamas when my friend Michelle invited me try the new pizza joint PS35. I politely declined and all she had to say was “but they have tots!”
Tot Tip
: The pizza tots are entrée size but the parmesan truffle oil tots are also delectable and less of a commitment!
12. Melted’s Tots for a Good Cause
Locations vary, check their website http://www.meltedtruck.com/
Though Melted’s Sweet Potato Tots and Truffle Aioli are the simplest tots in this round-up, they’re pretty addictive. They also contribute to a great cause as 100 percent of the profits from Melted Truck goes to benefit International Justice Mission.
And there you have it. My tot round-up. Did I miss any of your favorites? Why Chia Seeds are a Superfood?
Chia Seeds – The Secret Superfood
Did you ever imagine that a potent superfood could be hiding on your window sill, appearing as a dog, a hedgehog or even a troll? Chia seed, most famous for their use as “Chia Pets” – has been proven to be an exciting health food offering surprising benefits. In spite of our perception of this humble seed, this ancient food is assuming its rightful role on our dinner tables.
What Exactly is Chia?
Chia is an edible seed that originates from a plant in the mint family: the desert plant Salvia hispanica, from parts of Guatemala and Mexico. They have historically been known to be the most crucial part of the plant and were eaten whole and utilized to make oil and flour.
The 16th century Codex Mendoza offers proof that chia was grown by the Aztecs in pre-Columbian times and was as crucial a food crop as maize. Chia seeds were an essential food of Mayan and Aztec diets and were the foundation survival provision of Aztec warriors.
What Are the Advantages of Chia?
Chia seed is a nutrient powerhouse that offers lots of advantages, from suppressing hunger and promoting weight-loss to alleviating joint pain and anxiety. Here are five powerful chia seed dietary benefits.
Soluble fiber – Chia seed consists of copious amounts of soluble fiber, that assists in preventing irregularity and can shield against heart challenges and general toxicity in the body. Adults need at least 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories taken in. As such, we typically require about 35-40 grams of fiber a day. Regretfully, the majority of people get around 10 grams a day, so increasing the daily fiber dose should be a primary focus. Luckily, just 1 oz. of chia seed (Approximately 3 tablespoons) has 11 grams of dietary fiber and is a great way to fulfill your daily fiber goals.
Protein – An oz. of chia seeds supplies over 4 grams of protein that contains all 9 vital amino acids along with some supplementary non-essential ones. This total protein is simple for your digestive system to absorb and doesn’t bring the undesirable elements of other vegetable-source proteins like soy. Soy protein isolate, typically used in vegetarian meat alternatives and energy bars, is an almost indigestible product that is extracted with poisonous chemical solvents. It’s developed almost completely from genetically modified soy plants that have been heavily sprayed with harmful chemical pesticides and herbicides. The advantage, in this case, falls to Chia.
Minerals – Chia seed is high in numerous essential minerals. A one oz. serving offers 18% daily RDI of calcium, 30% daily RDI of manganese, 27% of the daily RDI of phosphorus and is also high in boron, which helps the body soak up and utilize calcium.
Antioxidants – Chia is also rich in anti-oxidants that will preserve the seed’s health and keep it from spoiling, however they will also supply many health advantages. Here are the fundamental antioxidants found in chia seeds and how they might enhance your health.
> Quercetin – Research has revealed that an antioxidant found in chia called quercetin significantly enhanced energy, endurance and physical fitness in healthy people who were not performing some kind of regular physical training. It can likewise minimize the impact of seasonal allergies and decrease swelling related to prostatitis and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, quercetin has been linked to promoting immune system and bone health.
> Chlorogenic Acid – This chia anti-oxidant has actually been discovered to have anti-cancer properties and may be effective in avoiding development of specific brain tumors. It can also hinder the release of glucose into the blood stream, reducing the danger of developing type 2 diabetes. Chlorogenic acid likewise helps increase the circulation of bile, relieving bile stagnancy and promoting gallbladder and liver health. It can likewise help to minimize the chance of cardiovascular illness.
> Caffeic Acid – This chia seed anti-oxidant can help prevent colitis (a condition that might result in colon cancer) heart disease, inflammation and specific cancers. It may also be utilized in healthy immune system maintenance.
Omega-3 – Chia is loaded with essential omega-3 fatty acid, more than found in flaxseed and even salmon, ounce for ounce. The omega-3 fat in chia supports efficient brain function, healthy skin, balanced moods and cardiovascular health.
Another Motivation to Eat Chia
Chia seeds also have outstanding hydrophilic (water holding) properties and can soak up about 9 times their weight in fluid. When taken with a glass of water, chia seed’s tendency to retain water assists you to remain consistently hydrated over a longer period, and keep electrolytes in your bodily fluids. This quality is a great advantage for athletes who want to remain hydrated and preserve peak energy levels while working out or competing.
Chia’s hydrophilic properties also make it an ideal for weight-loss. When chia soaks up fluids, it naturally expands, making you feel fuller longer with less calories, but with more nutrition. This is a really healthy way to lower your calorie intake without denying yourself nutrition or satisfaction.
Can I Simply Eat Flax Seed Instead?
Why chia seed when flax seed is simple to find and so inexpensive? There are a few good reasons. The shell of the chai seed is quickly broken down, even when swallowed whole. This is a huge advantage over flax seed, which must be ground for your body to process it. If you eat flax seed whole, it will simply pass right through your digestive system, undigested. When flax is ground, it begins to oxidize, or go rancid, right away, but will only add free radicals to your body if you consume it. Chia gains the obvious advantage here as well.
In addition, chia does not include the toxic substances and harmful compounds that flax does. Flax consists of chemicals called goitrogens that may negatively affect the thyroid and prevent it from functioning properly, among other things. Chia likewise consists of many more nutrients than flax, clearly making it the best choice between the two.
How Best to Use Chia
You may be surprised to learn that chia seed has almost no taste of its own and is the easiest healthy food to add to your diet plan. You can bake with it, use it as an oil replacement in recipes or utilize it as a thickening agent in sauces, salad dressings and gravies. Try these simple ideas for using chia seeds in your daily diet:
Grow Your Own – Chia microgreens or sprouts are easily grown and fantastic on sandwiches or in salads, pesto or stir fry. To effectively grow your own, use a wide, shallow dish (about 2-3″ deep) with potting soil or a soil-free seed starter mix. Sprinkle on your chia seeds and water every day. You will have fresh sprouts in just a few days that can be harvested over and over. Just snip, rinse and use. Keep in mind that as the greens mature, they gain a slightly fuzzy texture, so it’s best to harvest the young plants.
Chia Gel – One of the finest and easiest ways to achieve the most nutrient value from your chia seeds is to create chia gel. Stir chia seeds into water (1 part seeds to 9 parts water) and leave them to soak for 24 hours or overnight, at least. Soaking the seeds activates their germination, making them easier to digest and enhances their already high nutrient content exponentially. The gel can then be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks for use in salad dressings, smoothies, or other recipes.
Lazy Chia – Should you still feel this is just too much work for you, benefits can be achieved by simply taking a tablespoon of chia seeds orally and washing them down with water. Even people who have trouble swallowing pills find the seeds go down easily. Do this every night right before bed and you will find it helps avoid the normal overnight dehydration by gradually releasing water.
Chia Seeds, Not Just a Fun Decoration
It’s highly recommended you familiarize yourself with the chia seed and incorporate it into your day-to-day diet. Take your cherished chia pet off the window sill, judiciously apply some scissors and put the trimmings on a salad, over fish or into a sauce or dressing.

Texas Monthly Magazine rates three Bryan-College Station Mexican restaurants’ tacos among Texas’ tastiest. Jesse’s Taqueria & Bakery, La Familia Taqueria, and Sal’s Garpez are the places to go for tacos, according to the authoritative and usually spot-on Texas Montly food critics.
Jesse’s Taqueria & Bakery 3310 East 29th St., Bryan, TX • 979-485-9841
Jesse’s Taqueria is situated near Blinn College in Bryan.
Jesse’s Taqueria & Bakery is well known for fresh tacos, lunch plates, Mexican sweet breads, flan, fresh baked cookies, and friendly “know you by name” service. Texas Monthly ranks Jesse’s carne guisada tacos amongst the entire state’s 120 best.
La Familia Taqueria 300 N. Texas Ave., Bryan, TX • 979-822-9192
La Familia in Downbryan prepares breakfast tacos that are locally famous and, thanks to Texas Monthly, known statewide among the Lone Star State’s best taco offerings.
Sal’s Garpez 2601 Harvey Rd., College Station, TX • 979-696-1407
Garpez Authentic MExican Food is recognized as exemplary by Texas Montly Magazine.
Sal’s Garpez is a family owned Authentic Mexican Food restaurant that has been serving the BCS community for the past 14 years. Texas Monthly Magazine rates Sal’s barbacoa tacos amongst the best in the state.
15 Great Taquerias in Bryan-College Station, Texas
Bryan-College Station Restaurant Guide : Tacos
Here’s our guide to some of the best tacos in the Brazos Valley. Several excerpts from complete articles on our favorite tacos are included below, click on the links for the whole story on each featured taco eatery. Happy taco eating!
Casa Rodriguez Mexican Restaurant 300 N. Bryan Ave., Bryan, TX • 979-779-0916
Taco Loco at Casa Rodriguez.
Casa Rodriguez has been a family tradition in Bryan since 1978.
Chef Tai’s Mobile Bistro Bryan-College Station • 979-268-3251
Calamari tacos by Chef Tai’s Mobile Gourmet.
Chef Tai Brings Gourmet Dining To A Parking Lot Near You I’m addicted to the Calamari Tacos which isn’t a regular menu item but shows up every other week or so. Crispy calamari and the amazing Asian Slaw wrapped up nicely in a corn tortilla. I always tell myself to stop after the second taco but never do.
Fuego Tortilla Grill 108 Poplar St., College Station, TX • 979-703-1804
Faves at Fuego Tortilla Grill. Image by Blonde Creative.
Fuego Tortilla Grill : Fresh, Hand Made Mexican Food… Fast! I got a little adventurous on this visit and tried the Dr. Pepper Cowboy ($3.79) taco with brisket, grilled onions, Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce, chipotle Cream corn and jack cheese on a hot, thick, hand made flour tortilla. The brisket was impressively prepared, tender and flavorful enough to be the pride of a small town barbecue joint. The chipotle cream corn and barbecue sauce were a perfect compliment to the brisket. I like a lot of sauce and flavor and the Dr. Pepper Cowboy did not disappoint. While eating this saucy taco had the potential to be a messy affair if the tortilla were to break, that didn’t happen and is unlikely to because the tortillas are so darned thick.
Fuzzy’s Taco Shop (College Station, TX) 1712 SW Pkwy., College Station, TX • 979-764-8226
Fuzzy’s Taco Shop (College Station, TX) serves fresh, handmade Baja-style Tacos and Mexican specialties. They offer indoor and patio seating, and the menu include fish tacos, burritos, nachos, queso, and ice-cold beer. The atmosphere at Fuzzy’s is bright, fun, and energetic – perfect for gathering with friends and family to watch a game, enjoy a beer or margarita, or just hang out.
Jesse’s Taqueria & Bakery 3310 East 29th St., Bryan, TX • 979-485-9841
Jesse’s Taqueria is situated near Blinn College in Bryan.
Jesse’s Taqueria & Bakery is well known for fresh tacos, lunch plates, Mexican sweet breads, flan, fresh baked cookies, and friendly “know you by name” service. Texas Monthly ranks Jesse’s carne guisada tacos amongst the entire state’s 120 best.

Mad Taco 404 Jane Street @ University Dr., College Station, TX • 979-704-6266
Chiles en Nogada Specialty Taco by Mad Taco. Image by Mad Taco.
Mad Taco Stands Out For Its Tortillas… & Lack Thereof The Chile Rubbed Salmon Taco featured seared salmon with cheese, avocado, marinated red onion, chile oil and cilantro aioli. It was all wrapped up in one of the best tortillas I had ever tasted. About the thickness of a Gordita shell, warm, soft, slightly sweet, heavenly!
Michoacana Taqueria 1322 S. Texas Ave., Bryan, TX • 979-823-1177
Michoacana Taqueria. Photo by Greg Deeter.
Michoacana Taqueria Is “Mind Blowing” Good The tacos were served from hot holds and then you add your own toppings from the bar like onions, cilantro, marinated purple onions, pico, limes or cucumbers. Cucumbers? Yes. There are also four types of sauce that you ladle on, two red and two green.
The Proudest Monkey 108 S. Main St., Bryan, TX • 979-361-4777
Breakfast taco and brisket taco at Proudest Monkey in Historic Downtown Bryan
Proudest Monkey Makes Monster Tacos Had a breakfast taco and a brisket taco. They were big, really big, but I ate every bite because they were good, REALLY GOOD!
Sal’s Garpez 2601 Harvey Rd., College Station, TX • 979-696-1407
Garpez Authentic MExican Food is recognized as exemplary by Texas Montly Magazine.
